At the same time, Angola has placed growing emphasis on strengthening maritime capabilities as security and economic priorities continue shifting towards offshore infrastructure protection and maritime domain awareness in the Gulf of Guinea.

As one of Africa’s leading oil producing nations, Angola recognises the strategic importance of protecting offshore energy assets, shipping routes and coastal infrastructure. This has supported continued investment in naval capability development, maritime coordination and regional security cooperation initiatives.

Recent international defence partnerships reflect this evolving strategic focus. Angola continues strengthening cooperation with countries including the United Arab Emirates, China, Brazil, South Africa, the United States and India as part of wider efforts to support capability enhancement, training, technology transfer and long term modernisation objectives.

One of the most significant recent developments was Angola’s expanding defence partnership with the UAE, which is now directly supporting naval modernisation through a landmark €1 billion programme with EDGE Group. The agreement includes the launch of the Angolan Navy’s first BR71 MK II Combattante corvette, NRA Ekuikui II, alongside additional corvettes, high-speed interceptors and integrated unmanned helicopter systems designed to strengthen maritime surveillance, fleet capability and national security.

Alongside defence modernisation, Angola is also continuing efforts to strengthen domestic industrial and technical capability. While the country’s defence industry currently remains focused primarily on maintenance and support activities, Angolan officials continue exploring opportunities to expand local expertise, industrial resilience and sovereign capability development over the long term.

At the centre of this effort is the Gabinete de Gestão Espacial Nacional (GGPEN), which continues driving Angola’s national space ambitions through the successful deployment and operation of AngoSat 2.

Since becoming fully operational, AngoSat 2 has expanded telecommunications capability, improved connectivity across multiple provinces and supported wider initiatives focused on digital inclusion and communications resilience. The satellite plays an increasingly important role in supporting telecommunications services, internet connectivity, digital broadcasting and strategic communications infrastructure, while also contributing to projects designed to improve access in remote and underserved communities.

Importantly, Angola’s investment in space capability also supports strategic sectors such as maritime coordination, emergency communications, infrastructure monitoring and disaster response, demonstrating the increasingly important relationship between technology, security and national resilience across Africa.

Angola also continues strengthening engagement through regional organisations including the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), contributing to regional dialogue, maritime cooperation and wider African security initiatives.
